Before Going to Bed, Check This Common Kitchen Appliance — It Could Help Prevent a House Fire

The humble toaster is one of the most familiar appliances in the kitchen, but it deserves more attention than many people give it. Toasters use powerful heating elements to brown bread, and crumbs can accumulate inside over time. If food debris builds up or the appliance develops a fault, it can increase the risk of smoke, overheating, or fire. That’s why it’s important to keep your toaster clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions, allow it to cool after use, and unplug it when recommended.

But the toaster isn’t the only appliance worth checking. Electric kettles, coffee makers, air fryers, and other countertop devices also rely on heating elements and electrical connections. Some coffee makers have warming plates that remain hot after brewing, while certain appliances have programmable features that keep them connected to power. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance about switching them off or unplugging them. Refrigerators and other appliances designed to run continuously should not be unplugged as part of a general bedtime routine.

One of the most important warning signs is the condition of the plug and outlet. If you notice a burning smell, unusual heat, discoloration, buzzing, crackling, or scorch marks, stop using the appliance. If there is smoke, sparking, or significant heat, don’t touch the affected plug or outlet. Keep your distance and seek appropriate emergency or electrical assistance. A qualified electrician should inspect suspected wiring or outlet problems before the equipment is used again. Overloaded power strips and extension cords can also create hazards, particularly when several high-powered kitchen appliances are connected together.

Before heading to bed, take a few moments to make sure cooking appliances are switched off, countertops are clear of combustible clutter, and cords aren’t damaged or trapped behind furniture. Keep smoke alarms working and make sure your family knows how to escape safely in an emergency. Unplugging suitable small appliances after use can be a helpful precaution, but it doesn’t replace proper maintenance and electrical safety. A quick kitchen check cannot prevent every fire, yet it may help you notice a problem before it becomes dangerous.

Do you unplug your toaster and other small kitchen appliances before going to bed, or do you usually leave them connected? Share your habit in the comments!
